To Judge or Not to Judge?
So are we suppose to judge or not?
This verse from Jesus gets our attention: Luke 6:37 (NASB95) “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned. In this instance Jesus says not to judge.
Matthew 7:3–5 (NASB95) “Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye? 5 “You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. Here Jesus tells us to take the log out our own eye, so that we can take the speck out of our brothers eye. In this instance Jesus says, judge yourself first and more harshly. Then you can help others with their stuff.
When the Corinthian church was rocked by immorality Paul said this. 1 Corinthians 5:12–13 (NASB95) “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church? 13 But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves,” So…. we do judge those in the church, but not those outside the church.
So if a brother is overtaken in a sin Paul said in Galatians 6:1 (NASB95) Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
So we don’t judge the world, we do judge each other in the church, but we do it in gentleness and grace.
