Real Rest
Matthew 11:28–30 (NASB95)
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Oh good, you are thinking, Jesus is going to come cook for me tonight! When I get home the laundry will all be done and the house will be clean. Finally a little help. Your weary, really, really weary, and you could use the help.
But sadly, the supper must still be cooked or retrieved from the grubby paws of the overly cheerful teenager at Chick-Fil-A. The pile of laundry is unmoved and possibly getting bigger and I am beginning to sense a bit of an attitude. The house, forget it, it was clean 45 minutes ago and now it looks like a class 5 tornado came through.
What Jesus promises us is rest, not from our chores, but for our souls.
Rest from the perceived or real expectations from other people that plays into our insecurities and fear of rejection and need for approval. Rest from the looming fears and anxiety of a million real an imagined things that haunt the backs on our minds and keep us awake. Something that happens in our minds because because we understand finally who Jesus is, what He came and did and what that means to us every single moment from here through eternity.
Jesus says, 28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” He says the answer is not a cleaner house, it’s Him. That is what you need, rest for you soul. So spend some time with Jesus. In His presence in worship, listening to Him in His Word or laying your fears before Him and talking to Him in prayer.
He is what we really need.
I love you, Pastor Randy
