Dirty Feet, Sins Forgiven
Simon knew all about God and about the law and about the temple. He had invited this man Jesus to his house for dinner in a desire to catch Jesus in some kind of fault that would incriminate him and in turn elevate his status in the religious community. What a miserable religion that is. He knew about God, but he did not know God.
While they were eating a woman came in from behind Jesus where he was reclined at the table and began to cry and as she cried her tear drops began to fall on Jesus feet. As they did she bent down and wiped his tear soaked feet with her hair in worship. Simon thought to himself, “I have him now, I can’t wait to go the synagogue and tell them how this so called “Son of Man” was letting a sinful woman touch him.”
She is overwhelmed by emotion because something incredible yet invisible has happened to her. Jesus has forgiven her sins and the incredible weight of shame and guilt that she has carried has been lifted. She feels new and clean and forgiven.
She can’t hold back; she must let him know how she feels. She must say thank you some how, yet every gift seems so inadequate. Tears of joy fills her eyes and run down her cheeks and land on the feet of Jesus.
Luke 7:44–48 (NASB95) Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 “You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 “You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 “For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.”
The woman knew she was a sinner and came to Jesus and received forgiveness and a new life.
Simon thought he was above all that and could not see that he desperately needed the forgiveness that Jesus was offering.
But he did, we all do and like the woman when we discover it, it is glorious.
Rejoice in being forgiven.
I love you, Pastor Randy
