Second place with Andrew
John 1:40 (NASB95) One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
Andrew is mentioned by name twelve times in the New Testament. In ten of those times he’s named along with Peter, his brother. Peter on the other hand has over 150 mentions. Andrew seemed to be the most likely candidate of the two. He was already a disciple of John the Baptist and he was one of Jesus’ very first disciples.
He went and found Peter and told him about Jesus.
John 1:41–42 (NASB95) He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).
Andrew might have thought, “Hey Jesus, I was here first, change my name, use me.” But it appears that Andrew served faithfully in the shadows. Maybe he learned that from John the Baptist. He apparently had a humble, usable heart.
John 3:27 (NASB95) John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given him from heaven.
Following Jesus isn’t about prominence or recognition or fame; it is about doing all we can to make Jesus known.
